“Make to order” (MTO) is a production and inventory management strategy used by businesses to manufacture products only after receiving a customer’s order. In contrast to “make to stock” (MTS) or “forecast-based production,” where items are produced in anticipation of future demand and stored in inventory, MTO businesses maintain minimal or no inventory of finished goods. Instead, they procure materials and components and initiate the production process only when a customer places an order.
